Nigerians get coconut head! So... after the bitcoin ban in Nigeria, people had mind to trade in bitcoin. Before the ban though, this yahoo boy allegedly tried to buy a Range Rover worth N44million with Bitcoin, and was arrested by the EFCC. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested suspected internet fraudster, Tobiloba Aramide Ogundiyan, who allegedly tried to buy a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) worth N44million with Bitcoin in Lagos State.

Ogundiyan was arrested by the EFCC Lagos Zonal Office on May 18, 2021 at River View Estate, Lekki, for alleged computer-related fraud. The suspect was accused by the EFCC’s Advance Fee Fraud Section of committing online fraud and converting his loot to the cryptocurrency.

Ogundiyan acquired his ill-gotten wealth from internet fraud, layered it into a Bitcoin account and finally integrated it by approaching a car shop owner in Lekki to purchase a Range Rover Vela P380 2018 model worth N44,000,000 ($97,626 USD in Bitcoin) sometime in March 2021. The EFCC also arrested seven other suspected Internet fraudsters namely: Samson Alabi Afolabi; Adebayo Dolapo Olumide; Daniel Boluwatife Akinwunmi; Moses Segun; Kelechi Thankgod Felix; Adeleke Godwin Tofunmi and Adewale Dapo Victor.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects include electronic gadgets (handsets, laptops), exotic cars, expensive jewelleries and antiques etc. The EFCC said in the course of its investigation, it found that apart from computer-related fraud, some of the suspects had completed the three stages of money laundering i.e. placement, layering and integration.

Also popular Instagram comedian, Pankeeroy said he went into Bitcom scam after he suffered depression. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested popular Instagram comedian, Nwagbo Oliver Chidera, better known as Pankeeroy, for his alleged involvement in computer-related fraud. Pankeeroy, with over 500,000 followers on Instagram, was arrested with 34 other suspected fraudsters by operatives of the Lagos Zonal Office of the commission.

EFCC said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at their hideout in James Court, Lekki, Lagos following verified intelligence received by the Commission over alleged criminal activities. Until his arrest, Chidera, who claimed to have gone into Bitcoin scam after he suffered depression, had been presenting himself as a vendor who redeems bitcoin vouchers using the platform to defraud his unsuspecting victims.

A Mercedes Benz AMG GLE model worth N36,000,000 was recovered from him upon his arrest, and investigations by the EFCC revealed that the suspect has N22,300,000 worth of Bitcoin in his blockchain account.
